Mid-Century Modernism in Baton Rouge @ Main Library

Louisiana State University Art History professor Dr. Darius Spieth will talk about mid-century modernist architecture used in the design of local buildings. Modernist architecture was a style that emerged in the first half of the 20th century and became dominant after World War II. One classic example is the old Baton Rouge Savings and Loan Association Building on North Boulevard. It was built in 1955 and today is a Holiday Inn Express.
Spieth not only is an Art History professor at LSU but also is a specialist in modernism. In 2006, he conducted a survey of modernist buildings on Florida Street and Florida Boulevard in Baton Rouge to be considered for inscription on the National Register of Historic Places.
