Calm Warrior Yoga @ USS Kidd

This class has been developed (partnering with Team RWB) with the intention for Veterans and their civilian supporters to be introduced to some basic yoga stretches and guided relaxation. These yoga poses require no previous yoga experience so it’s perfect for beginners!

Recent research has shown that many forms of yoga can not only improve your physical health and healing but can possibly reduce the effects of PTSD, anxiety, addictions, insomnia, and other mental conditions.

Please bring a yoga mat and a blanket. We will be able to supply a limited number of yoga mats.

All Veterans and their civilian supporters are encouraged to try this yoga practice in our private, safe, non-intimidating environment with only others and a caring, knowledgeable instructor.

While the class begins at 6PM, there will be a 15 minute window for everyone to be on the mat for 6:15PM.

Healthy BR Family Fit Day 2017 @ Brooks-City Park

Healthy BR will host their fourth annual Family Fit Day, a FREE open streets initiative centered around BREC City-Brooks Park to create temporary paved parks for running, walking, bicycling, dancing, playing, and socializing on May 20th from 7:30AM-12:30PM. 

During the event local organizations will offer fitness classes, speakers, healthy cooking demonstrations, kids' activities, bike safety classes, runs, bike rides and much more. Fitness classes and fitness events include a Varsity Sports run, Tai Chi, the Mayor’s Bike Ride, yoga, HIIT, karate, hip hop dancing, kid fit events, dance aerobics, circuit training, Zumba, cardio kickboxing, and a hula hoop contest. 

Parking will be available in the City Brooks parking lot, or on side streets around the City Brooks park. Most major roads will be shut down around the park, so please plan accordingly. 

Baton Rouge joins over 90 other cities hosting Open Streets initiatives in the United States and Canada. The streets are open to all abilities to encourage everyone in Baton Rouge who wants to improve their mental, physical, and emotional health to come out, bring their families, and even pets too! In addition to running her successful business HERBS by Sarah, she was the former Director of Education for Chef John Folse's White Oak Plantation and led popular monthly culinary garden seminars. She's also led heb classes for LSU's OLLI program since 2011. Sarah is a contributor to cookbooks and publications including "Louisiana Cookin'" and "The Essential Herbal" magazines. She loves cooking with fresh herbs and is passionate about teaching others to share in that joy. 

These are "sit, watch, learn and taste" demos where each participant enjoys a sample of the dishes cooked. Mardi Gras Mambo 10k, 15k & Fun Run

#RunMardiGras in 2017! 

Now in its 19th year, the Mardi Gras Mambo 10k, 15k and 1 Mile Fun Run presented by Core Power will take place in downtown Baton Rouge from North Boulevard Town Square. 

The 2017 Mambo features a new 10k and 15k course setup, outdoor post-race party and lots of great swag that the Mambo is known for.

Current registration is $25 for 10k runners and $35 for 15k runners. Registration includes a long sleeve, soft-style cotton shirt, custom Mambo finishers medal, personalized bib number, disposable chip timing, and access to the post-race fete in the North Boulevard Town Square in downtown Baton Rouge.

Cooking Basics 3 Part Series @ Red Stick Spice Company

Join Chef Traci Vincent in the kitchen as she works with you to master basic cooking techniques. Having basic techniques under your belt will get you more comfortable in the kitchen and less reliant on recipes. You'll be whipping up delicious dishes with what's on hand on the fly!

. You'll learn cut/chop basics plus more specific nuances like the difference between mince and chiffonade. You'll be expertly guided by Aimee who is a graduate of LCI with solid restaurant experience. Aimee is currently a personal chef and works closely with Jay Ducote on his culinary adventures. 

This is a hands-on cooking class. Each participant will enjoy a sample of the dishes. Participants also receive a sample product and a store discount to use the day of the class.

Yogurt & Water Kefir @ Red Stick Spice Company

Join Anne and store staffer Kaitlynn for a hands-on class that explores the probiotic world of yogurt and water kefir. This fun and informative class will explore the world of yogurt and explain the role of probiotic bacteria in the production of yogurt. 

Yogurt Making is a "hands on" class where you will create and take home a jar of yogurt. You will have the choice of making traditional or dairy-free yogurt. Your jar is reusable for your next batch of yogurt! You will also taste prepared yogurt in a variety of dishes.

This class is for participants 13 and up. Teenagers must be accompanied by an adult; both the teenager and accompanying adult must purchase a class seat. Cancellation/refund requests must be received at least seven days prior to the class date.

Students should bring their knife from home. In the event, we find that your knife is not suitable, we will have knives on hand. Students will receive guidance on purchasing knives and also local resources for sharpening.

This is a hands-on cooking class. Each participant will take home the items they cut and chop. Plus, each participant will enjoy a meal that we prepare using the ingredients from the class. Participants also receive a sample product and a store discount to use the day of the class.
